News: Mah Sing Foundation Raises RM3.6million In 2019

Oct 30, 2019

Mah Sing Group Berhad (Mah Sing) together with its charity arm, Mah Sing Foundation (MSF) successfully raised a total of RM3.6 million for 2019, which was announced at its charity night held early this month.

The funds were successfully raised from the generous donations from the Foundation’s employees, business associates and partners, along with other close friends and family members of the Group.

The MSF charity night was graced by the presence of Minister of Housing and Local Government, Yang Berhormat (YB) Hajah Zuraida Kamaruddin as the guest of honour. In attendance were Mah Sing’s Chairperson Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Siti Norma, Mah Sing’s Founder and Group Managing Director, Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Leong Hoy Kum and MSF’s Chairman, Dato’ Indera Syed Norulzaman Syed Kamarulzaman.

Mah Sing Foundation’s Chairman, Dato’ Indera Syed Norulzaman said, “This year marks the 14th year MSF was founded. The Foundation had tremendous growth since its inception by giving back to the community with the support from our generous donors. This year alone, we have supported more than 25 organisations and schools, and 10,000 individuals were benefiting from it. I am also pleased to announce that we have raised a total of RM3.6million in 2019. This could not have been achieved without the support of all donors in helping us to continue serving the community at large. We will continue to impact more lives and communities in a measurable and sustainable way.”

In 2019, the Foundation has positively impacted more than 10,000 beneficiaries which include Persatuan Day Break; Community at Heart; Tabung Thalassaemia Malaysia; Persatuan Dyslexia Malaysia; Malaysia Spinal Injuries Association (MASIA) and Malaysia Lysosomal Diseases Association (MLDA).

In recognition of Mah Sing Foundation’s (MSF) commitment to build a better community, MSF was recently honoured with 2 prestigious awards at the 2019 JCI Malaysia Sustainable Development Awards for its Mushroom Cultivation Project in collaboration with Hopes Malaysia. The award ceremony was organised by JCI Malaysia and endorsed by the United Nations Malaysia.

Aimed at uplifting the livelihood of the rural community in Kampung Tuan, Sabah, the Mushroom Cultivation Project was named “Winner” for 2 categories – Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) No. 1 (No Poverty) and No. 17 (Partnership for the Goals). The mushroom cultivation facility is successfully generating about 30% to 55% extra income per month for the villagers there.

Commenting on this latest achievement, Mah Sing’s Founder and Group Managing Director, Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Leong Hoy Kum said, “We are extremely honoured and proud to be recognised with such prestigious accolades at the 2019 JCI Malaysia Sustainable Development Awards. These wins are on the back of the hardwork and dedication of the MSF team as well as our generous donors in ensuring that we continue to positively impact the lives of the community at large. Moving forward, we will continue to help those in need to enhance their lives for a better future through the Foundation.”

The Mushroom Cultivation Project was officially launched on November 2018 to construct a mushroom cultivation farm as a solution to create a more economically sustainable community amid high demand of mushrooms in Sabah – especially from the hospitality industry. The contribution from MSF was used to improve their infrastructure and to harvest mushroom seeds.

Mah Sing’s Director of Group Strategy and Operations, Jane Leong said “The needs of the targeted beneficiary need to be understood first before deploying the solutions to help them. This is extremely important as our NGO and social enterprise partners understand their wants and needs and have direct access to them. As such, the Foundation hopes to make a bigger impact through the causes we support. We welcome any like-minded NGOs, Social Enterprises and corporate companies to collaborate as we believe that more sustainable impact could be achieved when the society comes together as a whole. Currently, we are in the midst of planning many exciting yet impactful programmes next year, especially together with the Program Perumahan Rakyat (PPR) communities.”

MSF remains committed to rollout more sustainable initiatives to improve the lives of local the communities that are aligned with its key pillars i.e.  Education, Health and Wellbeing, as well as Community Development.
