News: Bukit Kiara Longhouse Residents Tired Of Waiting For Promised Housing

May 30, 2019

After 37 years, Bukit Kiara longhouse residents are yet to receive the affordable housing units promised to them under the master resettlement agreement that they signed with Yayasan Wilayah Persekutuan (YWP).

To expedite the realisation of the agreement, Pertubuhan Penduduk Perumahan Awam Bukit Kiara submitted a second memorandum to the Prime Minister’s Department, reported The Star.

The agreement saw YWP promising to provide each of the 98 families one free housing unit and another at a discount of 50 percent.

The group’s chairman Sunderam Vadiveloo sees no problem in starting development works for the project given that the High Court has already denied Taman Tun Dr Ismail residents’ bid to overturn Kuala Lumpur City Hall’s (DBKL) conditional planning permission and development order for the Taman Rimba Kiara project.

“We have already waited for 37 years. We were promised the affordable units by the previous government within three years… I don’t know what is the problem with this government that is causing the delay,” said the chairman.

“Whatever the problem may be, we do not want to know. We just want the promised affordable units.”

The affordable houses formed part of a mega-project, which also involved building eight blocks of 42- to 54-storey high-end serviced apartments.

The affordable housing project comprised 350 housing units spread across a 29-storey block. Of the 350 affordable homes, 200 units were set aside for the relocation of Bukit Kiara longhouse families.

Sunderam revealed that they support the scaled down version of the project.

The new plan now includes a 17-storey block with 204 affordable housing units, and four blocks of between 41- to 45-storey condominiums, with a toal of 1,082 units.

Meanwhile, park-goers and Taman Tun Dr Ismail residents still oppose the construction of the luxury apartments, for fear of its negative impact on traffic flow and the environment.
